Rwanda:

In 1994, almost a million people were killed in 100 days of violence in Rwanda.

  • The genocide took place in April of 1994 for a total of 100 days.

  • 800,000 to 1,000,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu were slaughtered by Hutu militia.

  • More than 800,000 children were orphaned.

  • Secondary affects of the genocide infected women with HIV/AIDS virus leaving 13 million children without parents.

  • Many orphans survived by creating families between 6-8 orphans known today as Child-headed Households.

  • Rwanda has one of the world's largest proportions of child-headed households, with an estimated 101,000 children living in 42,000 such households.

  • The new flag of Rwanda was effective at the beginning of 2002 and displays the colors blue, green, and yellow: Peace, Prosperity, and Potential.

  • Rwandans see themselves as survivors.
SBCC students are raising $5,700 to build a home for one Child-headed Household.
